At the start of the pandemic, remembers MIT Technology Review's senior editor for AI, the community "rushed to develop software that many believed would allow hospitals to diagnose or triage patients faster, bringing much-needed support to the front lines — in theory. "In the end, many hundreds of predictive tools were developed. None of them made a real difference, and some were potentially harmful." - https://www.technologyreview.com/2021/07/30/1030329/machine-learning-ai-failed-covid-hospital-diagnosis-pandemic/

Anti-vaxxers live in a weird world of fear and paranoia. According to a 2019 study of 700 or so people responding to a facebook anti-vax video they believed that polio viruses don't actually exist and that it's pesticides that caused polio. Remember how the No-Fly list would only ever catch bad guys and it ended up with German businessmen getting kidnapped and sent to Gitmo. Well, they're building a child porn list that will never get automated because it generates waaaay too much data to be scanned by people, and will result in warrants being issued for unexamined ‘evidence’ that turned out to be photos of your daughter’s Barbie. Post of the week
Virtually every vaccine ever made has made evident that any detrimental side effects show up in first two months after administration. This is because the vaccine itself is cleared quite quickly by the body. All that remains afterward are the antibodies.
History tells us that severe side effects are extremely rare, and if they if do occur, they usually happen within the first two months.
The mRNA molecules used in the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are especially fragile, he notes, so “they are out of your body in a day or so.” A stroll through vaccine history confirms that even the most damaging side effects have indeed taken place within a six-week window.

Being "YouTube famous" is a fairly low bar, and theoretically any weirdo with enough time and inclination can at least attempt it. And two, most of these people are social media whores who think it's a good idea to air all of their weird shit in public. Back in the day, we wouldn't even use our real names or the cities we lived in online. Now every kid thinks they'll be the next Tik-Tok sensation when they do!

Willing to defend those principles too. That’s admirable, perhaps (if you look at things like the Hong Kong riots. But before you throw a tantrum with a hatchet you best be absolutely certain your principle is really important and not just an incredibly stupid opinion.

In my last health & safety role, we handled a report that a manager broke his nose because he was in the windowless bathroom, when someone switched off the light while leaving. He panicked and ran right into a wall.
It started as a virus and mutated into an IQ test.
Shower sex is fucking awful. Every woman that I've ever met likes to have showers so fucking hot that it burns my skin. It's like having sex in the middle of a magma storm. For some reason, my wife can't stand being outside when it's 80 degrees but she turns the shower on to a molten lava level.
Those medium sized truck drivers are the worst. They're not big enough to be work trucks, not small enough to be home trucks. They're just asshole trucks. I mean, except for my wife's.

It's not the motivations here that bothers me. It's that they can do this at all that bothers me.
We don't produce 'clean' hydrogen because it costs 10 times more to produce than from natural gas and because it's stupid. You generate electricity and then you use the electricity to split water to produce hydrogen which you truck around the country to put in a car where it's used to generate electricity to propel the car. At which point you've used twice as much electricity than you would have if you'd just put it in the battery in the first place.

“The media won't tell these stories.” True, they're too busy sharing the actual footage they captured to focus on the stuff you imagined.
In the same way seatbelt usage tells airbag skeptics that airbags aren't effective. Why wear a seatbelt if your car has a perfectly good airbag? Are the airbags not effective? Clearly it's all just a conspiracy orchestrated by Big Seatbelt to sell more belt tensioners. Of course the answer is that both seatbelts and airbags are partially effective, and that using both is more effective than using either on its own. In car safety features as in pandemic mitigation strategies, the best approach is defense in depth.

"The surest way to work up a crusade in favor of some good cause is to promise people they will have a chance of maltreating someone. To be able to destroy with good conscience, to be able to behave badly and call your bad behavior 'righteous indignation' — this is the height of psychological luxury, the most delicious of moral treats." - Aldous Huxley, Crome Yellow

My wife is trying to buy a bra. We've spent twenty minutes looking at every bra they have, I'm not allowed to touch any knickers or put the bras on my head. My hands have to be in my pockets the whole time, no jiggling hands and no making eye contact with anyone. The queue has twenty people in it and is growing surly because the nice lady at the front is returning a dozen items and now the assistant is on the website on her phone showing the customer products that are not in stock here but can be ordered and no one will complain and the woman holding us up won't make eye contact and I get shhh'd every time I try to make a comment and I want the pub and its only 10 in the morning.
